The
Meredith Victory was one of many ships that rescued Korean refugees
during
the Chosin Reservoir battle. 14,000 Korean civilians were rescued.
The Communists threatened to kill them by beheading for aiding the
South
Koreans. The Meredith Victory was called the Ship of
Miracles.
"One
of the greatest humanitarian feats of all time occurred before
Christmas of 1950, when over 100,000 North Korean men, women, and
children were evacuated from North Korea as the Allied forces left the
country. Never in the recorded history have combatants rescued so many
civilians from enemy territory in the midst of battle. Many of those
refugees live free to this day in the United States and South Korea.
They will never forget the men of Changjin."

“Scrambling
up cargo nets let over the side, literally thousands of Korean men,
women, and
children climbed to safety. They filled the holds, the between-deck
spaces, the
main and boat decks, and clung in the rigging. It was not until more
than
14,000 were aboard that the Meredith Victory steamed out of Hungnam to
pass
through a 30-mile enemy mine field. With
little food and water aboard, with no doctor, not even an interpreter,
for
three days the Meredith Victory made her way down the coast of Korea.
During
this time she added to her passenger list five babies born enroute."

"The evacuation of Hungnam marked the first time in history an American army has withdrawn by sea under enemy pressure."
