The Setting, 1950:
  • November 25th, two regiments (6,000 men) of the 1st Marine Division march to Yudam-ni at the Chosin Reservoir
  • November 27th,  the regiments begin to attack and advance toward Yalu River
  • November 27th- 30th, Marines are attacked and surrounded by three divisions (over 30,000) of the Chinese Army
"The attack began at 0815. By midmorning the troops came under heavy  fire. Unable to make good on their advance the Marines fell back to their defensive positions at Yudam-ni."

"While the 79th and 89th CCF Divisions pounded the northwest arc of the Yudam-ni perimeter during the night of November 28th-29th, the 59th completed its wide end-sweep to the southeast and moved against the 14 mile stretch of road to Hagaru."
Montross, Captain

By November 30th the surrounded Marines decided to break out and fight their way back along the narrow road to Hungnam.  Battles were fought at different places along the way; Toktong Pass, Hagaru-ri, Koto-ri, and Chinhung-ni. The Marines carried their wounded, their dead, their supplies, weapons and ammunition. They reached Hungnam on December 15th. By December 25th, the First Marine Division along with approximately 100,000 Korean civilians  were loaded onto ships and sailed away.

“Retreat, hell, we’re simply attacking in another direction.”

O.P. Smith, General

"We will suffer heavy losses. Our vehicles may not get through, but we will make it somehow."
Anonymous Marine

"Yard by yard, mile by mile, the column slugged its way down the mountain road. A truck stalled at a hairpin curve, and an enemy machine gun suddenly flailed the road from a nearby hill."
N. A. Canzona, Captain

"The commies have infiltrated so far south that they have the entire 1st Marine Division cut off and isolated, except by air."
Joseph Wosser, Jr., 1st Lt
