1950

  • "June 25th North Korean attacks South Korean forces south of the 38th parallel.
  • June 27th President Truman orders U.S. air and sea services to give support to South Korean forces.
  • June 29th North Korean army seizes Seoul.
  • June 30th President Truman orders U.S. ground troops to Korea.
  • July 1st First U.S. combat troops arrive in Korea.
  • July 7th General Douglas MacArthur named Supreme UN Commander.
  • August 2nd First U.S. Marine Brigade reaches Korea.
  • September 15th U.S. troops successfully land on Inchon.
  • September 26th Seoul is recaptured by U.S. troops.
  • October 1st U.S. sends a surrender message to Korea.
  • October 7th General Assembly of United Nations adopts a resolution that 'to furnish such assistance to the Republic of Korea may be necessary to repel the armed attack and restore international peace and security' and that 'all appropriate steps be taken to ensure conditions of stability throughout Korea.' U.S. troops cross 38th Parallel.
  • October 8th First Marine Division ordered to assault Wonsan.
  • October 8th Mao Tse Tung secretly orders Chinese 'Volunteers” to 'resist the attacks of U.S. imperialism.'
  • October 19th The Chinese army crosses the Yalu River in massive numbers.
  • October 25th Chinese forces fight with South Korean troops south of the Yalu River.
  • October 26th First Marine Division lands at Wonsan on the east coast of Korea and begins to advance north to the Chosin Reservoir.
  • October 27th UN forces halted by Chinese army.
  • November 25th First Marine Division advances to Chosin Reservoir.
  • November 27th Chinese army launches violent assault on First Marine Division at Chosin Reservoir.
  • November 28th U.S. Marines surrounded by the Chinese army and Marines begin fighting their way back to Hungnam.
  • December 9th Evacuation of First Marine Division and 91,000 Korean refuges from Wonsan and Hungnam begins.
  • December 24th Evacuation of marines and Korean refugees complete.
  • December 25th Fighting still goes on."
